Lake Pichola, City Palace, Saheliyon Ki Bari, and more — your complete 2-day Udaipur plan.
Udaipur — the "City of Lakes" and the "Venice of the East" — is one of India's most romantic and visually stunning cities. Nestled among the Aravalli hills with shimmering lakes, white marble palaces, and colorful bazaars, Udaipur casts a spell on every visitor. While you could easily spend a week here, this 2-day itinerary covers all the essentials for a first-time visitor arriving by taxi from Jaipur (400 km, ~6 hours).
Morning — City Palace (2-3 hours): Start your Udaipur experience at the magnificent City Palace — the largest palace complex in Rajasthan. Built over 400 years by successive Mewar rulers, the palace is a maze of courtyards, terraces, towers, and balconies with spectacular views over Lake Pichola. The Crystal Gallery houses rare Osler crystal furniture that was never unpacked during the Maharana's lifetime. Don't miss the Durbar Hall with its massive crystal chandeliers.
Late Morning — Jagdish Temple (30 min): Just below City Palace, this beautifully carved 17th-century Vishnu temple is one of Udaipur's most active places of worship. The dancing figures, elephants, and musicians carved into the facade are extraordinary.
Afternoon — Lake Pichola Boat Ride (1 hour): The quintessential Udaipur experience. The boat takes you past the Lake Palace (now a luxury hotel), Jag Mandir island, and the ghats of the old city. The golden hour before sunset is the most magical time. Boats depart from Rameshwar Ghat near City Palace.
Evening — Bagore Ki Haveli Cultural Show (1.5 hours): This 18th-century haveli on Gangaur Ghat hosts a nightly folk dance and music show (7 PM) showcasing Rajasthani puppetry, Ghoomar dance, fire dance, and other traditional performances. One of Udaipur's most entertaining evenings. Book tickets early — it sells out in peak season.
Morning — Saheliyon Ki Bari (1 hour): The "Garden of the Maidens" was built for 48 ladies-in-waiting of a queen. The garden features beautiful fountains (powered by natural water pressure), lotus pools, marble elephants, and lush green lawns. Peaceful and photogenic — visit early before the crowds.
Mid-Morning — Fateh Sagar Lake (30 min): Drive along Fateh Sagar's lakeside road for beautiful views. If time permits, take a boat to Nehru Island Park in the middle of the lake.
Late Morning — Monsoon Palace / Sajjangarh (1 hour): Perched 944 meters above sea level on a hilltop overlooking the entire city, this abandoned palace offers the most spectacular panoramic views in Udaipur. The drive up through a wildlife sanctuary adds to the experience. Best in the morning when visibility is clearest.
Afternoon — Hathi Pol Bazaar & Shopping (2 hours): Udaipur's main market street is a sensory delight — miniature paintings, silver jewelry, leather goods, handmade paper journals, and Rajasthani textiles. Bargain gently but firmly. The small art galleries along the lake-facing lanes sell beautiful original paintings by local artists.
Evening — Rooftop Dinner: End your trip with dinner at one of Udaipur's famous rooftop restaurants overlooking the lake. Ambrai, Upre by 1559 AD, and Raas Leela offer spectacular views with excellent Rajasthani and international cuisine.
The 400 km drive takes approximately 6 hours via NH-48 through the scenic Aravalli hills. We recommend departing Jaipur by 6 AM to arrive by noon, leaving the afternoon free for sightseeing. The optional stop at Chittorgarh Fort (3.5 hours from Jaipur) adds 2 hours to the journey but is highly recommended.
