Visit the holy Ajmer Sharif Dargah and the sacred Pushkar Lake in one day. 145 km from Jaipur.
Just 130–145 km from Jaipur, the twin towns of Ajmer and Pushkar form one of Rajasthan's most rewarding day-trip or overnight-trip destinations. Ajmer is home to the most visited Sufi shrine in India — the Dargah Sharif of Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti — while nearby Pushkar, just 11 km away, contains the world's only temple dedicated to Lord Brahma and is one of Hinduism's most sacred pilgrimage sites. Together, they offer a rare opportunity to experience Islamic and Hindu spiritual traditions side by side in a single day.
Ajmer Sharif Dargah: The shrine of Sufi saint Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti (1141–1236) draws millions of pilgrims annually from across India and the world, regardless of religious affiliation. The saint, known as "Gharib Nawaz" (friend of the poor), is believed to grant wishes of those who pray at his shrine with sincere devotion. The ornate courtyard, the massive iron cauldrons used to cook langar (community food), the qawwali singers performing outside the inner sanctum, and the fragrance of rose petals and agarbatti create an atmosphere of extraordinary spiritual intensity.
Taragarh Fort: Built in 1354, this imposing fort perches on a hill above Ajmer and offers panoramic views of the city and the Anasagar Lake below. The climb is steep but rewarding, and the fort's massive walls and cisterns give a sense of the medieval defensive architecture of Rajasthan.
Anasagar Lake: A large artificial lake built in the 12th century by Anaji, the grandfather of Prithviraj Chauhan. The lakeside is particularly pleasant in the morning, with several beautifully designed marble pavilions (baradaris) built by Shah Jahan in the 17th century. The sunset over the lake is spectacular.
Adhai Din Ka Jhonpra: A stunning mosque built by Qutb-ud-din Aibak in 1192, allegedly constructed in just two and a half days (adhai din). Its magnificent screen of seven arches decorated with Quranic inscriptions is one of India's finest examples of early Islamic architecture.
Pushkar Lake: Pushkar is built around a sacred lake that Hindus believe was created when Lord Brahma dropped a lotus flower to earth. The lake is surrounded by 52 ghats (bathing steps) where pilgrims take ritual dips, offer prayers, and release flower garlands into the water. The ghats are most atmospheric in the early morning and at sunset when aarti ceremonies are performed.
Brahma Temple: The most significant of Pushkar's 400+ temples, this 14th-century shrine is one of only a handful in the world dedicated to Lord Brahma, the creator deity of the Hindu trinity. The reason for the scarcity of Brahma temples is explained by a legend involving Brahma's wife Savitri — pilgrims travel specifically to this temple to seek Brahma's blessings.
Savitri Temple: A 3-km rope-way ride or a steep 30-minute climb from Pushkar leads to this hilltop temple dedicated to Savitri, Brahma's consort. The views of Pushkar town, the lake, and the surrounding desert landscape from the top are absolutely breathtaking, particularly at sunset.
Pushkar Bazaar: The main street of Pushkar is lined with colorful shops selling silver jewelry, tie-dye fabrics, incense, rudraksha beads, flutes, and an extraordinary variety of spiritual and artistic crafts. The town has a distinctly bohemian atmosphere, attracting both Indian pilgrims and international backpackers. Don't leave without trying the Pushkar ke pakode and the famous malpua sweet at one of the roadside stalls.
Pushkar Camel Fair: If your visit coincides with the annual Pushkar Camel Fair (typically in November), you're in for a spectacle like no other — 50,000 camels, horses, and cattle converge on the fairgrounds, along with folk performers, acrobats, and traders from across Rajasthan. It's one of the world's great fairs.
